West Nile Virus (WNV) is a member of the Flavivirus genus and belongs to the Japanese encephalitis antigenic complex within the Flaviviridae family. It is commonly found in Africa, Europe, the Middle East, North America, and West Asia.
WNV can cause neurological diseases and even death in humans. Infection usually occurs through the bite of infected mosquitoes. About 80% of infected people are asymptomatic, while other cases may progress to West Nile fever or severe forms of the disease. Approximately 20% of those infected develop West Nile fever, with symptoms such as fever, headache, fatigue, body aches, nausea, vomiting, skin rashes (usually on the trunk), and swollen lymph nodes.
The Bioperfectus West Nile Virus Real-Time PCR Kit is an in vitro diagnostic test, based on real-time PCR, intended for the detection of WNV RNA. Samples can be obtained from human whole blood and serum.
