Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), also called sexually transmitted infections (STIs) or venereal diseases, are contagious infections caused by pathogens (bacteria, viruses, parasites) and characterized by person-to-person transmission through sexual activity and intimate contact.
Ureaplasma urealyticum (U. urealyticum) is the most common human pathogen isolated from the genital tract of men with infertility. It is only 15–25 µm in diameter and contains double-stranded circular DNA. Historically, Ureaplasma was divided into 14 serotypes classified into two distinct biovars: Ureaplasma parvum and Ureaplasma urealyticum. U. urealyticum is pathogenic. It is one of the most common parasites of the human genitourinary tract and can cause non-gonococcal urethritis (NGU) in men, vaginosis in women, and negative pregnancy outcomes.
The bioPerfectus Technologies Ureaplasma Urealyticum (UU) Real-Time PCR Kit is an in vitro diagnostic test based on real-time PCR technology for the detection of U. urealyticum nucleic acids. Samples can be obtained via male urethral swabs or female cervical swabs.
