Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), also called sexually transmitted infections (STIs) or venereal diseases, are contagious infections caused by pathogens (bacteria, viruses, or parasites) and are characterized by person-to-person transmission through sexual activity or intimate contact.
Treponema pallidum, also known as Treponemia pallidum (TP), is the causative agent of syphilis. It belongs to the treponeme group and can cause serious health effects if not properly treated. Syphilis is a widespread venereal disease, for which humans are the only reservoir. It can be divided into congenital syphilis and acquired syphilis. The congenital form occurs when an infected pregnant woman transmits the pathogen to the fetus via the placenta; the acquired form occurs through infection after birth. The average period between infection and the appearance of the first symptoms is approximately 21 days.
The BioPerfectus Treponema Pallidum Real-Time PCR Kit is intended for the in vitro qualitative detection of Treponema pallidum nucleic acid in human serum and plasma samples.
