Introduction

Sindbis virus (SINV) is an enveloped RNA virus belonging to the Alphavirus genus, of the Togaviridae family. Sindbis virus is related to the Chikungunya virus. It was first isolated from Culex mosquitoes in 1952 in the Nile River delta, Egypt.

The first human cases were described in:

  • Uganda (1961)

  • South Africa (1963)

  • Australia (1967)

Subsequently, the virus was recognized as the causative agent of a syndrome characterized by skin rash and arthralgia. The clinical disease caused by SINV infection is known by different names depending on the region:

  • Pogosta disease (Finland)

  • Ockelbo disease (Sweden)

  • Karelian fever (Russia)

The Bioperfectus Sindbis Virus Real-Time PCR Kit is an in vitro diagnostic test, based on real-time PCR technology, intended for the detection of Sindbis virus RNA. Samples can be obtained from human serum and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF).
