Introduction
Leptospirosis is a bacterial disease caused by bacteria of the genus Leptospira. It affects both humans and animals and is most commonly found in temperate or tropical climates. Leptospires are found in a wide variety of animal species, primarily rats and pigs, which can continue to excrete the bacteria into the environment continuously. Millions of people are infected every year worldwide; however, information and treatment can be limited.

Mild cases may present as self-limiting fever, while severe cases may manifest symptoms of acute inflammatory liver injury and renal lesions, such as jaundice, hemorrhage, and uremia, or meningitis symptoms, such as altered level of consciousness and signs of meningeal irritation. More severe forms include hepatic and renal failure, massive pulmonary hemorrhage, or even death.

The BioPerfectus Leptospira Real Time PCR Kit, based on fluorescent PCR technology, is intended for the qualitative detection of Leptospira DNA in human whole blood or urine samples.
