Introduction

Legionella pneumophila is a major pathogen causing Legionnaires’ Disease. The bacterium was identified following a pneumonia outbreak in 1976 among participants of a veterans’ convention in Philadelphia. Studies show that there are more than 50 species and 70 serogroups of Legionella.

Approximately 90% of Legionnaires’ Disease cases are caused by Legionella pneumophila (LP), which has 15 serogroups. Serogroup 1 is responsible for about 84% of cases worldwide.

The disease is an acute bacterial infection whose clinical manifestations are typical of atypical pneumonia, often accompanied by damage to multiple organ systems. Due to non-specific symptoms, Legionnaires’ Disease is often overlooked or misdiagnosed, leading to rapid progression of the condition.

The BioPerfectus Legionella Pneumophila Real-Time PCR Kit is an IVD kit intended for the detection of Legionella pneumophila DNA. Samples can be obtained from throat swabs, nasopharyngeal swabs, and sputum.
