Introduction

Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), also called sexually transmitted infections (STIs) or venereal diseases, are contagious infections caused by pathogens (bacteria, viruses, parasites) and are characterized by person-to-person transmission through sexual activity or intimate contact.

Herpes Simplex Virus belongs to a subfamily of herpesviruses. It is a DNA virus that infects humans and is divided into two serotypes: type I and type II. An estimated 3.7 billion people under age 50 (67%) have HSV-I infection globally. Genital herpes caused by HSV-II affects approximately 491 million (13%) people aged 15 to 49 worldwide. More than 99% of genital herpes cases and 46% of miscarriages are caused by HSV-II.

Most HSV infections are asymptomatic and may never show symptoms. In symptomatic individuals, HSV-1 and HSV-2 differ mainly by the area of the body where the outbreak occurs. Additionally, HSV-2 infection increases the risk of acquiring HIV by approximately threefold.

The BioPerfectus Herpes Simplex Virus Type I/II Real-Time PCR Kit utilizes real-time fluorescent PCR technology and is intended for the in vitro qualitative detection of Herpes simplex virus type I and type II DNA obtained from male urethral swabs and female cervical swabs.
