Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), also called sexually transmitted infections (STIs) or venereal diseases, are contagious infections caused by pathogens (bacteria, viruses, or parasites) and are characterized by person-to-person transmission through sexual activity or intimate contact.
Herpes simplex virus (HSV) infection, known as herpes, is common worldwide. It is an STD caused by two types of viruses: herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) and herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2). An estimated 3.7 billion people under age 50 (67%) are infected with HSV-1 globally. Genital herpes, caused by HSV-2, affects approximately 491 million people (13%) aged 15 to 49.
Genital herpes is most often asymptomatic or unrecognized but can cause painful blisters or ulcers at the site of infection, ranging from mild to severe cases. The infection is lifelong, and symptoms may recur over the years. Additionally, HSV-2 infection increases the risk of HIV acquisition by approximately threefold.
The BioPerfectus Herpes Simplex Virus Real-Time PCR Kit utilizes real-time fluorescent PCR technology and is intended for the in vitro qualitative detection of herpes simplex virus DNA obtained from male urethral swab and female cervical swab samples.
