Introduction

Bacteria called Group B Streptococcus (GBS) cause GBS disease. These bacteria commonly live in people’s gastrointestinal and genital tracts, usually without causing harm. Babies can be exposed to GBS bacteria during childbirth.

Group B Streptococcus is a leading cause of neonatal and infant sepsis and meningitis worldwide. It is associated with maternal sepsis, stillbirths, and preterm births, and can also cause disease in immunocompromised adults and the elderly; however, the highest incidence occurs in newborns and infants up to 3 months of age.

In 2015, it was estimated that GBS caused 319,000 cases of neonatal disease annually, resulting in 90,000 deaths and at least 57,000 stillbirths. On average, 18% of pregnant women worldwide carry GBS (with regional variations).

The BioPerfectus Group B Streptococcus Real-Time PCR Kit is intended for the in vitro qualitative detection of Group B Streptococcus nucleic acid in genital secretion and rectal secretion samples from pregnant women during the perinatal period (from the 28th week of gestation up to 1 week postpartum).
