Francisella tularensis is a pathogenic species of Gram-negative coccobacillus, an aerobic bacterium. It is non-spore-forming, non-motile, and is the causative agent of tularemia, the pneumonic form of which is often lethal without treatment.
It is a fastidious, facultatively intracellular bacterium that requires cysteine to grow. Due to its low infectious dose, ease of aerosol dissemination, and high virulence, F. tularensis is classified by the U.S. government as a Tier 1 Select Agent. When found in nature, it can survive for several weeks at low temperatures in animal carcasses, soil, and water.
The BioPerfectus Francisella tularensis Real-Time PCR Kit is an in vitro diagnostic test, based on real-time PCR technology, intended for the detection of Francisella tularensis DNA. Samples can be obtained from human blood.
