Introduction
Ebola Virus Disease (EVD), formerly known as Ebola hemorrhagic fever, is a severe and often fatal illness affecting humans and other primates. The virus is transmitted to humans from wild animals (such as fruit bats, porcupines, and non-human primates) and subsequently spreads within the human population through direct contact with the blood, secretions, organs, or other bodily fluids of infected people, as well as with surfaces and materials contaminated with these fluids.
The average case fatality rate for EVD is approximately 50%. In previous outbreaks, this rate has varied between 25% and 90%.
The Bioperfectus Technologies Ebola Virus Real-Time PCR Kit is an in vitro diagnostic test, based on real-time PCR technology, intended for the detection of Ebola virus RNA (Zaire and Sudan strains, which together account for more than 99% of EVD cases). Samples can be obtained from whole blood, serum, plasma, and urine.
