Coxiella burnetii is an obligate intracellular bacterial pathogen and is the causative agent of Q fever.
C. burnetii is a Gram-negative, coccobacillary bacterium, highly resistant to environmental stresses such as high temperatures, osmotic pressure, and ultraviolet light. These characteristics are attributed to a small-cell variant form of the organism, which is part of a biphasic developmental cycle that includes a large-cell variant form, which is more metabolically and replicatively active.
The bacterium can survive common disinfectants and is resistant to many other environmental changes, such as those present in the phagolysosome.
The BioPerfectus Coxiella burnetii Real-Time PCR Kit is an in vitro diagnostic test, based on real-time PCR technology, intended for the detection of Coxiella burnetii DNA. Samples can be obtained from human blood.
