Introduction
H5N2 is a subtype of the Influenzavirus A species, which is classified into subtypes based on two main surface glycoproteins: hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA). The H5N2 subtype infects a wide variety of birds, including chickens, ducks, turkeys, falcons, and ostriches.

Outbreaks of highly pathogenic H5N2 occasionally result in the culling of thousands of birds on poultry farms. Evidence indicates that people who work with poultry can be infected by the virus, but they show few or no noticeable health effects. Even individuals exposed to the highly pathogenic H5N2 variant, which caused the death of ostrich chicks in South Africa, appear to have developed only conjunctivitis or, possibly, a mild respiratory illness. There is no evidence of person-to-person H5N2 transmission. In 1983, H5N2 caused influenza outbreaks in chickens and turkeys across many farms, resulting in significant economic losses.

The BioPerfectus Avian Influenza Virus Subtype H5N2 Real Time PCR Kit is an in vitro diagnostic test, based on real-time PCR technology, intended for the detection of H5N2 virus RNA. Samples can be obtained from human throat swabs and nasopharyngeal secretions.
