Streptococcus pneumoniae (SP) is a lance-shaped, Gram-positive bacterium. It is an opportunistic pathogen that typically colonizes the nasopharynx and mouth of healthy individuals. Children, the elderly, and immunocompromised individuals are high-risk groups.
SP has nearly 100 serotypes, with more than 30 being pathogenic. It is one of the leading causes of illness and death in children in China and worldwide. In children, SP primarily causes pneumonia, suppurative meningitis, sepsis, sinusitis, otitis media, bronchitis, and endocarditis.
In recent years, SP has developed increased resistance to antibiotics, making treatment more difficult. The WHO estimates that SP causes approximately 1.6 million deaths per year, of which 0.7 to 1 million occur in children under five. SP infections tend to be prolonged and highly severe.
