Introduction

Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) is one of the leading causes of pneumonia. Based on the antigenicity of its G attachment protein, it is divided into type A and type B, both of which present very similar clinical symptoms.

RSV is the most significant pathogen for lower respiratory tract infections in infants and children, with the highest incidence between 2 and 6 months of age.

  • Incubation Period: 3 to 7 days.

  • Symptoms: May include high fever, rhinitis, pharyngitis, and laryngitis, progressing to bronchiolitis and pneumonia.

  • Complications: In some cases, complications such as otomastoiditis, pleurisy, and myocarditis may occur.

Risk factors include:

  • Prematurity

  • Congenital heart disease

  • Pulmonary dysplasia

RSV infection can trigger asthma attacks or worsen existing conditions. In adults and older children, it generally manifests as an upper respiratory tract infection.

The BioPerfectus Respiratory Syncytial Virus A/B Real Time PCR Kit is an IVD reagent based on fluorescent PCR technology, intended for the qualitative detection of RSV type A and B in throat swabs from infants and children.
