Introduction

Legionella are Gram-negative aerobic bacteria associated with respiratory infections. They are widely found in environmental water sources and can cause sporadic cases or outbreaks.

Systems that generate aerosols — such as faucets, showers, whirlpools, cooling towers, and nebulizers — facilitate the transmission of Legionella from water to air.

Legionellosis generally presents in two distinct clinical forms:

  • Legionnaires’ Disease (LD): Pneumonia accompanied by severe multisystem involvement.

  • Pontiac Fever: A self-limiting influenza-like illness.

Legionnaires’ Disease may include additional non-specific symptoms such as fever, dry cough, myalgia, dyspnea, diarrhea, and neurological manifestations like headache and lethargy. In contrast, Pontiac Fever is characterized by malaise, myalgia, and fever, but in a milder form and without pulmonary involvement.

The BioPerfectus Legionella Real-Time PCR Kit is an IVD kit intended for the detection of Legionella DNA. Samples can be obtained from throat swabs, nasopharyngeal swabs, and sputum.
