Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) is a disease caused by a virus — specifically, a coronavirus — called Middle East Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus (MERS-CoV). Most patients with MERS developed severe respiratory disease, with symptoms such as fever, cough, and shortness of breath. Approximately 3 or 4 out of every 10 reported MERS patients have died.
