Introduction

Trichomoniasis is a common and treatable STD caused by infection with Trichomonas vaginalis (TV). Trichomonas vaginalis infection occurs worldwide, with more than 170 million people infected annually. About 70% of infected individuals do not have any signs or symptoms. When symptoms do occur, they can appear between 5 and 28 days after infection, ranging from mild irritation to severe inflammation. Infected pregnant women are more likely to have preterm delivery and low birth weight babies.
