Clostridioides difficile is a gram-positive, spore-forming bacillus. It is the most common infectious cause of nosocomial diarrhea. C. difficile infection often leads to long periods of hospitalization and is one of the main causes of epidemic outbreaks in large hospitals. Infected patients may remain asymptomatic, present with mild diarrhea, or develop severe pseudomembranous colitis.
