Monkeypox virus is an enveloped double-stranded DNA virus belonging to the Orthopoxvirus genus of the Poxviridae family. It can be transmitted through contact with bodily fluids, skin lesions, or internal mucosal surfaces. There are two distinct genetic clades of the monkeypox virus: the Central African (Congo Basin) clade and the West African clade. Historically, the Congo Basin clade has caused more severe disease and was considered more transmissible.
The Monkeypox Virus Genotyping Real Time PCR Kit is an in vitro diagnostic test, based on real-time PCR technology, intended for the detection and identification of DNA from the West African clade and the Congo Basin (Central African) clade of the monkeypox virus. Specific primers and probes are designed based on the G2R_WA gene regions of the West African clade and the C3L gene of the Congo Basin (Central African) clade.
Additionally, the kit contains a constitutive gene (RNase P) as an internal control (IC) to monitor sample collection and nucleic acid extraction. Samples can be obtained from human tonsillar swabs, nasopharyngeal swabs, serum, whole blood, lesion exudate, and crust.
