Introduction
Hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) is a group of clinically similar diseases caused by hantaviruses from the Bunyaviridae family. HFRS includes Korean hemorrhagic fever, epidemic hemorrhagic fever, and nephropathia epidemica. The viruses that cause HFRS include Hantaan, Dobrava, Saaremaa, Seoul, and Puumala.
Hantaviruses are carried and transmitted by rodents. Symptoms of HFRS usually develop within 1 to 2 weeks after exposure to infectious material. Initial symptoms begin suddenly and include intense headache, back and abdominal pain, fever, chills, nausea, and blurred vision. Later symptoms may include low blood pressure, acute shock, vascular leakage, and acute renal failure, which can cause severe fluid overload. The severity of the disease varies depending on the virus causing the infection. Supportive therapy is the main pillar of treatment for patients with hantavirus infections.
The BioPerfectus Hantavirus Real Time PCR Kit, based on fluorescent PCR technology, is intended for the qualitative detection of RNA from hantaviruses that cause HFRS, including Hantaan, Seoul, and Puumala. Samples can be obtained from human serum.
